How to turn a WhatsApp voice message into text
First you need the voice message as a file on your phone or computer; then you open it here. Menus may vary slightly between app versions.
On Android
- In the chat, long-press the voice message and tap the share icon.
- Save it to Files or your storage (or send it to yourself by email).
- Come back to this page, tap the box above and pick the file (it ends in
.opus).
On iPhone
- Long-press the voice message, tap Forward and then the share icon (the arrow).
- Choose Save to Files.
- On this page, tap the box above → “Browse” and choose the audio.
On a computer
- Open the web or desktop app, hover over the voice message and use Download in its menu.
- Drag the downloaded file onto the box above.
Why not just upload it to any online transcriber?
Voice messages are private conversations. Most online transcribers upload the file to their servers to process it. Here the speech recognition model runs inside your browser, so the audio is not sent anywhere. There's also no daily limit and no account.
And the transcription built into the app?
Some messaging apps can already transcribe voice notes in certain languages and devices. This tool helps when that option doesn't appear, when the message is long or in another language, or when you want to copy, fix and keep the text, or download it with timestamps.
Frequently asked questions
Which formats work?
WhatsApp's .opus files and other common voice note formats such as .ogg, .m4a, .mp3 and .wav, as well as video files.
Is it accurate with accents or noise?
It uses an open-source Whisper model that handles accents well. Very noisy recordings or people talking over each other will have more mistakes; you can fix the text before copying it.
Does it cost anything?
No. The site is free and supported by ads.
